Retaining wall for the ZAG art space

Retaining wall for the ZAG art space

About the project

ZENYK ART GALLERY (ZAG) is a new cultural space in Lviv where contemporary architectural solutions blend with traditional art. As part of the building’s renovation, which took place throughout 2024, the Budhub team installed formwork for the retaining wall at this site.

The retaining wall served not only to stabilize elevation changes and hold back the soil, but also fulfilled a decorative function—an important element of the architectural design of the entire site. The project’s architects called for the use of fair-faced concrete, the surface of which must be smooth, uniform, and free of noticeable defects, stains, or irregularities.

Customer Inquiry

The client submitted a request for formwork for a retaining wall with a high-quality concrete finish. The main requirement was a smooth, clean concrete finish that closely matched Fair-faced concrete standards: uniform in color, free of defects, stains, and irregularities.

Challenges

  • bevels at the formwork joints to create clean, decorative lines in the concrete;
  • an upper chamfer for a smooth, finished wall edge;
  • a logical arrangement of the formwork panel imprints for an aesthetically pleasing result.

At the same time, the client had budget constraints—it was necessary to achieve high quality without significantly increasing costs.

  • Vertical formwork area:
    150 m²
  • System:
    PERI TRIO
  • Surface requirement:
    Fair-faced concrete

Our Solutions

A Combined Approach to Material Procurement

We used new formwork panels as well as equipment from Budhub’s rental fleet, replacing the plywood with new plywood sheets. This allowed us to optimize the budget without compromising surface quality.

Engineering Design

The engineering department designed a layout for panels of the same type—this made it possible to minimize the number of joints and ensure an even distribution of pin holes across the entire wall surface.

Supervised Installation and Technical Recommendations

The team prepared detailed recommendations for the construction crew and supervised the installation: proper installation of formwork panels, taking into account the length and height of the walls, and dividing the area into sections for concrete pouring. The concrete was thoroughly compacted and vibrated during pouring to minimize defects.

Equipment used

The Budhub team supplied the site with a complete set of vertical formwork, which was selected to meet the requirements for fair-faced concrete.

  • Vertical formwork:
    150 m²

Result

Thanks to the use of properly selected equipment and adherence to technical guidelines, we were able to achieve a high-quality concrete surface that fully met the client’s expectations. When viewed from a distance of 20-30 meters, the surface looks aesthetically pleasing — with no visible joints or unevenness. The retaining wall for ZAG has become yet another successful project in Budhub’s portfolio, confirming the company’s expertise in executing projects involving fair-faced concrete — over the past few years, it has completed approximately 15 such projects.
