And here it’s important to take a broader view. Global manufacturers of machinery, automobiles, and electronics—Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, Google, Tesla—are building factories in China. Not because it’s “cheap,” but because they’ve long been able to ensure the appropriate level of quality to meet specific standards. The same applies to plywood: if the manufacturer adheres to the technology, controls the drying, pressing, and structure of the veneer, then the country of origin ceases to be a determining factor.
Single-press plywood is indeed not capable of withstanding heavy loads, but double-press plywood from trusted manufacturers can withstand up to 15 pouring cycles, meet current needs, and perform reliably.

How to choose Chinese film faced plywood for formwork?
To avoid buying plywood at random, it’s best to look for specific technical characteristics of the material. In practice, it is Chinese plywood that is most often subject to substitution: low-grade or recycled material with a minimal plywood lifespan is sold under the guise of “high-quality” plywood.
Therefore, when making a selection, it is important to focus on the actual manufacturing process, the consistency of the batch specifications, and how the plywood performs under load during the concrete pouring process—rather than on the country of origin. Below, we will examine the key characteristics that distinguish high-quality material from that of critically low quality.
Pressing type
This is the main factor affecting the service life. If the pressing type is not specified or the seller cannot identify it, this is a sign of a low-quality product.
Actual Thickness: For Chinese film faced plywood, the actual sheet thickness is often 19.2–19.6 mm, rather than the 21 mm stated in the specifications. This is important because a thinner sheet = greater deflection, and therefore a higher risk of unevenness on the concrete surface.
Be sure to check with a caliper, not just by eye.
Lamination (film thickness)
- 120 g/m² — standard lamination for the budget segment
- 220 g/m² — denser, with better abrasion resistance (ideal for repairing panels and extending the life of the board)
The film does not determine the strength of the plywood, but it significantly affects its wear resistance.
Veneer quality and number of layers
The layers should be:
- equal
- without large cavities
- with a minimal proportion of low-quality poplar veneer
Numerous internal voids cause the plywood to break down quickly under the pressure of the concrete mix, even if the slab is double-pressed.

the color and texture of the panels in the batch are uniform (no mixed batches)
